Tribeca Film Festival Announces Its 2018 Lineup

The Tribeca Film Festival is now going into its 17th year, and while it still doesn’t command the respect of a Sundance or Cannes or Toronto, it’s certainly been able to find its identity in recent years, premiering a number of great films that for whatever reason, Sundance and SXSW passed on.

It’s already been announced that this year’s Tribeca will kick off on April 18 with the CNN Films doc Love, Gilda about Gilda Radner, but the festival’s Centrepiece will be Zoe., the new film from Like Crazy director Drake Doremus, starring Léa Seydoux, Ewan McGregor and Christina Aguilera. The festival will close on April 29 with the Closing Night film being Liz Garbus’ doc The Fourth Estate about the New York Times.

As usual, Tribeca is offering a fairly robust line-up of films that includes films in competition, films out of competition, many World Premieres and a couple movies that played at Sundance like the Jury Prize winner The Miseducation of Cameron Post. Others that have played other festivals include Woman Walk Ahead starring Jessica Chastain, Mary Shelley starring Elle Fanning and the Sony Pictures Classics release The Seagull.

Tribeca are particularly proud to announce that 46% of the 96 films in and out of competition, including 75 World Premieres, are directed by women.

Some of the World Premieres that jump out at first glance include Ondi Timoner’s Mapplethorpe starring Matt Smith as the famed photographer; actor Alex Pettyfer’s directorial debut Backroads; Beatriz at Dinner director Miguel Arteta’s new film Duck Butter; Noomi Rapace and Ethan Hawke in Stockholm; Black Panther’s Martin Freeman in the midnight movie Cargo; and the Netflix documentary Bleeding Edge from Amy Ziering and Kirby Dick (The Hunting Ground) about the medical biz.

Tribeca has also become quite known for its Tribeca Talks as well as the After the Movie QnAs at many of their Special Screenings, which often feature some of the top experts in their fields. Although this year’s Tribeca Talks haven’t been announced, you can see below which films will have special extended QnAs.
